Works on research of rock formation parameters based on core samples have been performed starting from its founding in 1946, i.e. during almost 70 years.
Core analysis laboratory today is a powerful research, development and production Giprovostokneft unit, having a strong technical and workforce capacity, and rendering a wide spectrum of services on core analysis, providing all required petrophysical information of further work on design engineering of oil and gas fields development, calculations and recalculations of hydrocarbon reserves, 3D-geological and hydrodynamic modelling.
Laboratory incorporates experienced highly-skilled specialists and has sophisticated equipment of domestic and foreign manufacture, ensuring high-precision metering and allowing to conduct competent laboratory experiments. Moreover, the bulk of basic instruments, facilities and auxiliary components have been produced in accordance with in-house technical assignments and drawings worked out by laboratory specialists.

Core analysis laboratory performs a wide spectrum of petrophysical works, i.e. photographing in day and ultraviolet light, layer by layer macro description of borehole core, selection for lab analyses and samples preparation of required dimensions and shapes (cylindrical, cubic, irregular shapes) depending on actual challenges, specific features of deposits under examination and client’s wishes, slides preparing, defining of porosity, volume and matrix density of samples, their absolute permeability, grain size and ultimate chemical analyses of rock samples, electrometric acoustic surveys carried out in surface (atmospheric) and reservoir conditions, investigation of thin sections and compiling of detailed lithologic rocks description based on results obtained, oil recovery factor defining by repressuring medium, phase permeability and compatibility of injection fluid with reservoir water and rock, including analysis, processing and integration of results, plotting of petrophysical functions, defining of lower limits and average values of reservoir properties of cored intervals, referencing core sample intervals to GIS, preparation of conclusion and scientific and technical report.
Moreover, in core analysis laboratory are carried out some specific works, i.e.: preparing and examining of slides, half painted by red alizarine, examining of painted slides; defining of absolute gas permeability not only considering amendments for Klinkenberg effect, manifesting itself in case of low-permeability rocks, but also considering more important and valid effect of pressure loss, characteristic for high-permeability rocks, and Forchheimer effect, characteristic for fractured rocks; defining of porosity, permeability, specific electric resistance (porosity parameter), compressibility under pressure-temperature conditions of natural occurrence of studied productive sediments; defining of mechanical properties by dynamic and static methods; defining of pore size distribution by different methods, capillary metric analyses, examination of rock fracturing performance on oversize core cubic samples according to Bagrintseva’s procedure etc.
Core analysis laboratory of Giprovostokneft, regardless of scientific and technical potential function and experience accumulated throughout quite a long period of its business activity, is not satisfied with what has already been achieved, but continues developing, absorbing new studies, working out and implementing new technical approaches, resolving nonstandard challenges. Besides contractual activities, laboratory specialists are constantly performing a number of scientific papers, searching and finding the answers to not yet explored issues in domain of rock physics.
The results obtained are annually reported at international-level conferences, published in periodicals, and some of them are patented. In respect of one of such scientific papers published in the magazine «Neftyanoye Khozyaystvo», laboratory members by invitation delivered a report at the first International Symposium for Energy Issues, held in July of 2014 in Aberdeen, Scotland).
